ALTERNATIVE EDUCATION SERVICES

The Regional Office of Education (ROE) serves students experiencing challenges that might interfere with their ability to learn and succeed in a traditional school setting. Through cooperative agreements with school districts and community partners, the ROE has established a network of supports and resources to assist children and their families, socially and emotionally and academically, while meeting their personal educational needs.

REGIONAL SAFE SCHOOLS PROGRAM (RSSP)

Regional Safe Schools Programs serve students in grades 6-12 who are suspension or expulsion eligible. The ROE administers multiple RSSP sites across Kane County, and students are placed in those respective sites based on recommendations by school districts and mutual agreement from ROE staff.

The RSSPs seek to:

  • increase safety and promote the learning environment of students’ home schools; and
  • meet the particular educational needs of enrolled students in a more suitable alternative educational environment.

During FY25, 209 students were served through this program.

ALTERNATIVE LEARNING OPPORTUNITIES PROGRAM (ALOP)

Alternative Learning Opportunities Programs work in tandem with RSSPs to serve a broader range of students in grades K-12 who still attend their home districts, but are at risk of academic failure, chronic absenteeism, or dropping out of school. ALOPs seek  to:

  • provide enrolled students with a range of academic, behavioral, and social/emotional interventions designed to increase their  academic achievement levels; and
  • place them in a safe learning environment that will best support their efforts to complete their education and meet Illinois Learning Standards.

COMMUNITY INTERVENTION PROGRAM

Our specialists support our Alternative Education Programs by working directly with students and families to address barriers that prevent regular school attendance and academic success. Serving as liaisons between the home, school, and communities, they visit schools across the county to provide individualized support, coordinate resources, and advocacy to help students re-engage in their education.

Services include:

  • Truancy Case Management
  • Developing individualized intervention plans
  • Home & School Visits
  • Connecting students and families with:
    • Counseling/therapy services
    • Mentoring and after-school opportunities
    • Employment or vocational training
  • Attendance and Academic Data Monitoring & Reporting

The focus of this work is to: 1) improve student attendance and engagement, 2) identify and address underlying barriers, and 3) support long-term success.

Online Courses

We provide timely and relevant support to educators in their journey to meet the ever-increasing demands of teaching and leading through a variety of synchronous and asynchronous online workshops. All offerings provide participants with research-based, relevant resources and help address the critical issues facing educators today.

Through these opportunities, educators are empowered to make immediate and long-lasting changes in their professional practice to help increase student achievement while also meeting their social and emotional needs.

Administrator Academies

By statute, every administrator must complete a minimum of one approved academy annually and a minimum of five in each administrator certificate renewal period.

The Illinois Online Academy provides a range of online academies that meet this criteria while providing research-based strategies to help you on you journey. Topics range from combatting educator burnout, meeting and presentation tips, restorative practices, and more.
